How do you measure brand awareness without expensive studies?

I keep running into conflicting takes on this and I'd love to hear from people with real experience. What would you tell someone facing this today, and what would you do differently if you could start over?

The framework I use: define what success means for you, measure the cheapest reliable proxy, and re-evaluate monthly. It has worked in almost every context I've applied it to.
